Earthquake!!

Post by Mikey »

Just had a big shaker here about an hour ago. Strongest one I've felt in 25 years here, though not the strongest one I've ever felt.

5.2 about 14 km from here, followed by about half a dozen aftershocks. We only felt the first one but it was about 20 seconds of pretty violent shaking.

Image

Whoa...just got another 3.9 aftershock, which we felt for a couple of seconds.

I guess Donald Fagen may be going back to Annendale sometime soon.

I did get an early warning on my iPhone. About 3 seconds before it hit.

Nice. Always good to get a shaker to wake your ass up.

Heard it was felt all the way in Newport Beach and it went on for a bit.

13 miles under ground?

Those distances are from the epicenter to my location.

We felt the Northridge quake a lot stronger and a whole lot further away. That was 6.7 so about 30 times stronger.

It apparently was initially reported to be 6.7. Then downgraded to 5.2. Kind of like Trump’s tariffs.

And Seer’s IQ.

I laughed.

I can't remember the last time I felt an earthquake. I think that 5.2 was the largest in California in the last year. I guess that monster off the coast where we had the tsunami warning doesn't count because it's in the ocean.

Too funny.

I guess the stat line:
Newport Beach has a median listing home price of $4.5 million as of August 2023, a median household income of $142,463, and a poverty rate of 6.9%. All of these factors make Newport Beach one of the wealthiest cities in Southern California.

is why Meds was so apoplectic over the matter. Like being associated necessarily imputes wealth or something else to be jealous of.

Is Newport Beach better than The City?

So no damage to that nice backyard set up ya got there. That's what really matters here.

I think the priority is to get power restored to all the discotheques and bath houses. What's the protocol here? I think everyone should avoid canned beverages for a week, open that tin of Orange Crush and you'll be wearing it.

I laughed.

I actually have a friend from Mexico that owns a house in Laguna Niguel right next to there. Which I like more than Newport.

Anyways, it's Orange county which is loaded with a bunch of Bob Hope loving douchebags.

That being said, I learned how to surf not far from there in San Clemente. My uncle had a place in Mission Viejo.

Cool, thx.

Last earthquake we had here we definitely felt. 5.8.

Yes, in Maryland, not usually known for that stuff, but we did. 2011.

Actually it originated in VA, but it's all the same roiling foul vomit pit of filth.

I would love to run geography smack, and in a sense I can, except facts on the ground in terms of demographics make that a non starter. Yeah this is no U&L utopia (Dins), nor is it Paradise (Mikey), or especially The City (m2).

The main redeeming value of the populace here is that every minute of every day there is total confirmation that death is not just a good thing, it's an AWESOME fact of mortal existence.

So many opportunities to confirm that yes, it is fitting.

For those who would call into question this stance, especially those who have no experience with the area, all I have to do is encourage you to come here, rent a vehicle and start driving around.

My buddy in college grew up in Corona Del Mar. Right next to Newport but, back in the 70s, it was still on the outskirts. Nothing but open space between their house and Laguna. His dad was a professor at UCI. Fun place to hang out back then.

Thought I had left earthquakes behind when I moved from CA to VA, but noooooo, had the pleasure of experiencing that one, too. Now that I’m here, peeps in the Phx area should be afraid. Very afraid.

Interesting animation here from Scripps Institute of Oceanography. I'm not sure how to link it except through Facebook. It shows a time lapse of the spread of energy from the quake. We are about 13 km from the epicenter, so pretty close. Mrs. Mikey and I were sitting in the same room when an alert went off on her iPhone, and we felt it maybe two seconds later. My phone (same model and service provider) went off a few seconds later, after I started feeling the shake. A lot of folks farther away probably had up to a minute of warning.

No reports of injuries or damage, beyond a lot of soiled underwear. I’ll take 100 of these if we don’t get “the big one.”

There is no scientific basis for this or any earthquake prediction. Quakes are always possible in places like California, but specific forecasts perform no better than random when tested. This user has posted similar claims every few days since 2009.
