• (b) Finding the optimal solution by iteratively improving a guess.
• (c) Minimizing a functional by finding the function that makes the functional stationary.
• (d) Solving a system of linear equations.

2. What is a functional in the context of variational methods?
• (a) A function that maps a set of numbers to a single number.
• (b) A function that maps a set of functions to a single number.
• (c) A function that maps a set of points to a single point.
• (d) A function that maps a set of vectors to a single vector.

3. What is the Euler-Lagrange equation, and what is its significance in variational methods?
• (a) A differential equation used to find the stationary points of a functional.
• (b) An algebraic equation used to find the roots of a polynomial.
• (c) A method for solving linear programming problems.
• (d) A method for finding the eigenvalues of a matrix.

4. Consider the functional J[y] = ∫[a,b] L(x, y(x), y'(x)) dx. What does L(x, y(x), y'(x)) represent?
• (a) The Lagrangian, a function of the independent variable, dependent variable, and its derivative.
• (b) The integrand, a function of the independent variable and the dependent variable.
• (c) The boundary condition, a constraint on the solution.
• (d) The derivative of the functional.

5. What is a necessary condition for a function y(x) to be an extremum (minimum or maximum) of a functional?
• (a) y(x) must be continuous.
• (b) y(x) must satisfy the Euler-Lagrange equation.
• (c) y(x) must be differentiable.
• (d) y(x) must be a polynomial.

6. In the context of variational methods, what is a boundary condition?
• (a) A condition that specifies the value of the solution at the endpoints of the interval.
• (b) A condition that specifies the derivative of the solution at the endpoints of the interval.
• (c) A condition that specifies the value of the functional at the endpoints of the interval.
• (d) A condition that specifies the value of the Lagrangian at the endpoints of the interval.

7. What is the principle of least action in physics, and how does it relate to variational methods?
• (a) The principle that the path taken by a physical system is the one that minimizes the action.
• (b) The principle that the path taken by a physical system is the one that maximizes the action.
• (c) The principle that the path taken by a physical system is the one that minimizes the energy.
• (d) The principle that the path taken by a physical system is the one that maximizes the energy.

Google Generative AI is your friend.

That was an upper division class for Engineering Control Systems. It's all about using an iterative process to resolve complex differential equations that have no explicit solution. Part of the reason I switched to Mechanical Engineering, where most of the problems at least have a real world analog.

What were Sir Isaac Brock's last words at The Battle of Queenston Heights?

1: Dragoon helmets are for assholes

2: Destroy the enemy! and no giggling

3: Don't let my fall interfere with the men

4: If an American offers to surrender, give him a potato. They like that. It's what I heard. If you want to go with a fruit basket, it's up to you.

Couple weeks news with modest media coverage...wonder why?

Alabama husband, father of two making national headlines as he ‘fights for life’ after unprovoked hatchet attack in Arizona

Image

Jacob Couch and his wife Kristen were traveling back to Arab after spending nearly a year in Los Angeles coping with the loss of their stillborn son. But before they could make it home, Jacob Couch was violently attacked by a hatchet-wielding assailant.

In an interview with KOLD-TV, Kristen Couch said a man attacked her husband at a bus stop as he bent down to pick something up, defenseless.

Frisco track meet stabbing suspect released after bond reduced to $250,000

Austin Metcalf, a junior Memorial High School in Frisco, was stabbed after he allegedly got into an altercation with 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony, who is a student at Centennial High School in Frisco. Reports indicated that the dispute began after Metcalf told Anthony he was sitting in the wrong spot. Metcalf was stabbed in the heart.

Ima rassis

Take the racist test here:
https://www.idrlabs.com/racism-scales/test.php

"This makes you:
26.81% more prone to general racism than the average person.
21.27% more prone to socio-historical racism than the average person.
25.93% more prone to perpetual foreigner racism than the average person.
24.9% more prone to racism than the average person overall."

A lot of bullshit but amusing. 5 minutes.

Obviously the kid in Dallas who shot schoolmates should be released with no charges. He felt threatened.

Same with the kid who stabbed a young man to death. Everyone should carry a large knife to a track meet.

Why are these innocents being held?

Are you implying that because some douchebags commit horrible crimes, that makes it OK to imprison and/or deport, without due process, people who haven’t committed any crimes…just because?

Because that’s sure what it looks like.

You asked “why are these innocents being held?” after describing a couple of horrible crimes. Why did you ask that question? I don’t believe you think that they are innocent (maybe you do) and I don’t see anyone seriously asking that question.

So this must be some kind of facetious question. Maybe you’re trying to run some kind of smack on folks who ask this about people who actually are innocent (as has been shown about a whole lot of people being rounded up by Dear Leader and his gang). Should we not be asking that question about people who actually are innocent, or are you In line with the “a few errors might be made but we can’t do anything about that” crowd?

Just wondering why you put that in there.
