Bonds Perjury Probe
Sources: Bonds may be subject of perjury probe
From Ted Rowlands

Federal prosecutors may be pursuing a perjury case against San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds, stemming from his denials of steroid use during a federal grand jury appearance in 2003, multiple sources have told CNN.

For more than a month, a different federal grand jury has been hearing evidence about whether Bonds may have lied during his testimony on December 4, 2003, the sources told CNN.

The U.S. attorney's office in San Francisco would neither confirm nor deny that a grand jury has been hearing testimony about Bonds.

Bonds' lawyers were unaware that a grand jury had been convened, said Harry Stern, a spokesman for his legal team.

Bonds, who now ranks third in career home runs, has steadfastly maintained he never knowingly used steroids. He was one of several prominent athletes called to testify as part of an investigation into BALCO, a San Francisco Bay Area laboratory accused of distributing steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.

At the time, Bonds and the other athletes were given immunity by federal prosecutors, provided they told the truth on the stand.

Bonds' attorney, Mike Raines, has previously accused prosecutors of trying to set Bonds up for a perjury charge by offering him immunity to get him in front of the grand jury, then later challenging his testimony.

BALCO's founder, Victor Conte, spent four months in jail after pleading guilty to distributing illegal steroids. Greg Anderson, a long-time friend of Bonds, was sentenced to three months in jail on the same charges.

Bonds' denials came under renewed scrutiny in March with the release of the book "Game of Shadows" by San Francisco Chronicle reporters Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams.

The book alleges Bonds used steroids and other performance enhancing drugs for at least five seasons, starting in 1998, and that Anderson -- his personal trainer -- helped him obtain the drugs.

Bonds has sued the authors to try to block them from making any money on the book, which his attorneys say was based on illegally obtained grand jury transcripts.

In the wake of the controversy over "Game of Shadows," Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig appointed George Mitchell, a former U.S. Senate majority leader and federal judge, to investigate steroid use in baseball.
Just a matter of when it would occur. Hell, if only a quarter of what was presented in "Book of Shadows" is accurate, Bond's shite is weak.

Something I must say on this matter...

Yes, it appears Bonds used Steroids and I believe he should be admonished for it. His HR Record should have an asterisk next to it..

BUT

The Dude did not kill anyone, He did not bite anyone's ear off, He is not being accused of mastermindinding 09/11.

I think people are taking this a little more serious than it needs to be and the media is hyping this whole thing a bit too much!!

What I am saying is..

Let's keep this in perspective!!

Perspective?

I don't see anyone saying take the bastard out and shoot him.

The guy needs to quit being a lying, cheating asshole and then a lot of this wouldn't be happening to him.

Not to be argumentative with you Jack, but for shits and giggles I will be.
Barry, like all other athletes is a role model and he has a responsibility to not only his team mates, the kids who look up to him, and his predecesors to keep the game pure. By cheating he is telling everyone (especiallykids who role model him) that it's ok. Don't worry about the consequences you'll get paid millions of dollars, you'll get your face in the newspaper, on TV etc....all the time. Even though the odds of kids making it to the next level is a million to one who's going to tell a kid that he won't make it. We constantly tell kids to shoot for their goals. Well Barry is clouding those goals and possibly steering kids in the wrong direction. If Barry did it, the it's got to be ok for me (little Johnny) to do it. So who's to say that kids all around America don't listen to their parents, coaches, teachers, etc...and start doing what Barry's done. Hell Barry has top notch doctors and people working with him to make sure he's healthy so if it's good enough for him then how can it be bad for me? No, he didn't kill anyone, however if one kid sticks a needle in his ass because he sees where it got Barry and he wants the same thing then who's responsible if that kid ends up with health problems and dies ina few years.

I understand what you're saying about it but take it a step farther. Barry may be responsible for a lot of negative stuff that may or may not happen in our society that is directly related to how kids approach their own athletic careers. Not only athletice but other things as well. How can I find a way to get an edge over my opponent by taking something that no one knows about. High Schools don't drug test so who's to say that kids aren't in the internet trying to find ways (illegally) to get that edge. For that, I blame him.

I hope you all understand, I don't think Bonds should get any special priveleges and he should face any charges for perjury and Steroid use/ abuse as seen fit by trial..

BUT

Have you seen the Pack of media hounds that follow this guy night and day (at least 25 at all times) and have you listened to Sports Radio for 1 hour in the last month and not heard tireless repetitive rants calling for this man's head on a platter???

I'm just saying, there are more important things to deal with
Do you agree or Disagree?

I'm just saying, I'm tired of hearing a bunch of blue collar Ditto Heads acting like they have never sinned!
Do you agree or Disagree?

I'm also saying that if a player(s) on your team that has done steroids or has been rumored to have done steroids..were facing the same daily grilling that Bonds does every day, You would also say...
"Let's put this in perspective and give the guy some space.."
(ie.. Sheffield, Giambi, Schilling, Frank Thomas were all named in Canseco's Book as possible Steroid suspects!!!)
Do you agree or disagree?

* I am not a Giants fan or a Bonds fan but I think most of the media are overdoing this and are out of control!!

^^^^^The media has always been like a pack of sharks that sense blood in the water. As long as they compete for headlines that will never change.
Bonds will be the first to bitch about the media and how it is ruining his life. But he doesn't mind using it to his own advantage, too. The best example of this is "Bonds on Bonds."

Second- Bonds is the only one suspected of perjury. He had ample opportunity to do a Giambi (Be truthful to the grand jury and apologize to the public). The public and media eventually forgave him of his errors. Bonds had that same chance and blew it. Apparently, he also considered himself above the law. Fuck him.

Lastly- The bed Bonds has to lie on is of his own making. He has spent years being arrogant and hateful of anything that was not Bonds. The public’s perception of Bonds is his cross to bear. The $15-20 mil he is making this year should be worth it all.

Worthy of my sympathy? Hardly... :meds:

As much as I hate Bonds, there is no way he'll face any real penalties or jail time. Selig talks a good game but hasn't the balls to act on anything. Remember he hid behind congresses skirt while they reamed Fehr a new one.

As far as this perjury charge goes, his testimony was leaked to the media. Confidentiality was breeched no charges will be filed. Bonds walks but will forever have this held over his head.

Bonds will bow out gracefully!! (or try to!!)

I will bet that Hank Aaron talked to Barry and made him an offer that Barry couldn't refuse!!

(Use his age and medical condition as an excuse for not breaking Aaron's Record). If Barry were to Break Aaron's record with Aaron still alive and aware that Barry was a juicer.. Aaron would have to publicly slam Barry but if Barry were to end his career second.. Hammering Hank would allow this to happen without making any negative public statements!!

Bonds will be able to enter the Hall of Fame with much less negative publicity than if he were the "New Home Run King" and baseball could move on...

**
ESPN on Barroid wrote:"I'm happy with what I've already done," Bonds said during an extensive interview as the Giants wrapped a three-game series in Colorado. "If I get it, I get it; if I don't, so be it. That's life, baby. That's life. It was fun while it lasted."

Because of increasing pain in a right knee that was surgically repaired three times last year and reduced his 2005 season to 14 games, and bone chips in his left elbow that have caused him much pain since the season began, Bonds told MLB.com his chances of catching Aaron are growing more unlikely.

"The thing is, I'm not trying to pass Ruth because Ruth doesn't have the record," he continued. "Hank Aaron has the record. Going past Ruth would be just like going past Mike Schmidt or anyone else in baseball. Right? The record is Hank Aaron's. The topic is Babe Ruth.

"I'm proud of what I've done," he told MLB.com. "If I finish with 709, so what? That's why I love Willie Mays, my godfather, and Willie McCovey. I respect them so much because they're happy with what they've done.
