and the winner is???????
some sort of big thing happening this week in the northwest......it will be a test of will and stamina as Chambers Bay is unlike any course these guys have seen unless they play in Scotland and Ireland a lot.....that fukker is a monster.....you know the drill, winner, dark horse, and any other thing you want to opine on....
winner-I'll go with the hot hand and say Spieth
I would say Dustin Johnson, but the guy withdrew from the St. Jude tourney because he was sick
dark horse-Justin Rose but I don't think he's got the length....really really dark horse, Philo, because he needs this one for the career slam
over/under on the number of times a player calls a referee over to ask if he's lying in a bunker or a waste area, 30
number of times the weather changes in the 4 days 18
number of "others" on the score cards-I'll take the over at 50

The guys bitching about the course won't win.

If this really comes down to who has had the time to study the course, I'm taking Lefty. He's literally got nothing else to do each year but study the US Open layout.

poulter is an asshat....always complaining about something......but everybody has to play the same course, so who gives a shit if pros call it a "farce" (I don't even know what that's supposed to mean, too easy or too tough? I'll go with the latter)......at 7,700+ yard par 70, half of the field is beat before they step on the first tee.....Poulter has guaranteed himself of not winning.....if that douche thinks it's a farce, maybe he should withdraw and give somebody else the chance to play......RTJ Jr. loves to hear players bitch about one of his courses, like "music to my ears" is how he phrased it......Jack Nicklaus always said he loved to listen to fellow players complain about a golf course because he figured for every one who did, it was one less person he would have to beat that week.
guaranteed not to win-Poulter, Ryan Palmer (as if he had a chance anyway), Webb Simpson....they've already lost

Believe it or not, I've never played Chambers Bay.
But our local sports talk radio guy, who's a golfing fool (and who I've slammed beers with) was invited to Media Day a month or so ago (I guess that's the last time any non-entrants played it). He said when he played it, the had it set up really easy, to get a bunch of media hacks around. Said it wasn't tough when he played it, but could see how it could be made extremely difficult. Also said that if one was going as a spectator, to bring your best walking shoes. Said it had a strange way of making every step uphill.
So, the old dude with the bad back and 14 Majors might have a rough go.
Seems only one serious contender (that we think of before they get between the ropes) who has ever played there in a tournament is Spieth (play the Am Championship there).
So, I'll go with Spieth.
Won't bet against Rory.

insofar as the first round goes, you can see in my first post that the only reason I didn't say Dustin Johnson is because he was supposedly sick last week hence he withdrew from the tournament.....the round went pretty much as I expected except for Fowler and El Tigre.....they both looked like a couple of 4 handicap players out there.....the thing is, the greens are rolling extremely slow relative to how fast they can make them and they will speed up as the weekend approaches.....right now they are rolling at about 11 to 11.5 on the stimp.....if they don't water them and roll them, they could easily get the speed up to around 13 to 14.....if they do that, watch the scores skyrocket as a course like that almost becomes unplayable with greens that fast......

Re: and the winner is???????
so what did we take away from this tournament?
spieth can fucking play under enormous amounts of pressure
Chambers isn't nearly as ragged as televison makes it look, but the greens were definitely young and inconsistent
Dustin Johnson can hit it a long way, but when it comes down to it, he can't putt for shit
Billy Horschel found out exactly what the meaning of "going viral" is first hand......he drew the wrong type of attention to himself via Twitter and pissed about 100,000 people off really quick by saying he lost a lot of respect for the USGA....look, he's entitled to his opinion but it's better if you just keep it to yourself....
Louis Oosthuizen is one cool cat and that 29 he shot on the back nine was unbelievable.....
Greg Norman is a decent color commentator but Joe Buck sucks monkey testes when it comes to calling a golf tournament....give me Jim Nance or give me death....

I didn't mind Norman. I would rather have Miller or Faldo. Joe Buck seems blissfully unaware of the game happening on the course. And the Fox camera crew have no idea how to follow a ball in flight.
That said, Spieth is money. The Open at St. Andrews is looking REALLY compelling this year.

Aparently there's a good reason the Open had never been played in the U&L. That course was an abomination. A ball that stops inside of 10 feet from the pin should not proceed to roll off the green and then roll another 50 feet into a collection area.
Yes, I know that Augusta has a notorious false front on number 9, but they don't place the pin 5 feet from it. The contours on some of those greens and fairways was absurd. Hopefully Clown's Mouth Bay never gets another Open. It was a great tournament in spite of the course. And Fox.
BTW, how come there's no good black golfers?

Goob's senility is kicking in. He'll remember next year, when they go back to Oakmont, and the field will hit less than half the greens, then putt them right off the back. Last time they played there, +5 won it -- because the greens didn't hold shit.
Yeah, because the best public courses in the world aren't in the U&L or anything.Goober McTuber wrote:Aparently there's a good reason the Open had never been played in the U&L.
Although my friends and I were kind of scratching our heads at the selection -- although bringing a new course into the fold, maybe one could make a case that the course itself should be the star of the show (not sure I'd agree with that). But I understand why Bandon is out -- because it's hours from anywhere. But Pumpkin Ridge has hosted the Women's Open, the Am Championship, and all sorts of big events. They used to play the Tradition at the Reserve, which is in a heavily populated area, and is set up for tournies. In Seattle, they've had the PGA Championship at Sahalee before. Near Bend is Crosswater, which was also built to host big events, and the town is (marginally) big enough to handle it.
So in conclusion, Goobs, pretty sure the U&L isn't at lacking in bigboy venues -- in fact, has the best ones. But for some reason, the USGA decided to hold it in the shittiest town in the entire U&L (by a long shot, according to the FBI crime stats).
I think in future site selections, they should hold way more of them on the West Coast -- the weather is 1000 times more reliable (but courses do tend to get firm in summer), and it just seems like the timing for TV works out better.

as an aside, my nephew sent me this picture
my nephew and his buddy were out Tuesday for practice rounds and I think it was on 18 when my nephews friend called out a bet to McIlroy betting him $20 he couldn't get it up and down from a greenside bunker.....of course, McIlroy proceeds to get it up and down so my nephew and his buddy head over to where McIlroy is coming off the green and his friend hands Rory the $20 bill.....McIlroy proceeds to autograph it and gives it back to him.....you can see the $20 in the hand he's shaking with McIlroy.....very cool indeed....
my nephew said the Euro pros were all really nice guys, but the American pros were pretty standoffish
oh and I blame Fox's cameras for making Chambers Bay look so washed out....the course doesn't look like that....I've been by it a number of times and it's pretty easy to distinguish the fairways and the rough....on TV they looked to be the same color and that's not true at all.../..

You could do a 7 year rota of nothing but west coast courses and none of them would come close to sucking. And you would triple ratings because you can broadcast in prime time.

I've never been to Crosswater, but have watched tournies there on TV. I think it would be a hit. When they built it, they built it loooong, and left room to set it up even longer. Scenic as all get-out, too.

I'm not talking about greens holding shots. The green held the shot I was talking about. It came to a complete stop 7 or 8 feet below the hole. Then rolled off the green.Dinsdale wrote:Goob's senility is kicking in. And the greens might have looked different when Felix drove by. It's also not a spectator friendly course.
http://espn.go.com/golf/usopen15/story/ ... th-us-open
The shot about the U&L was obviously a gratuitous drive-by. I know you have many wonderful courses out there, and I really liked watching continuous live coverage from 1 PM to almost 10 PM. Just not on Fox. Whose contract is for 10 years.
Oh, here's a nice photo of one of the greens:

There is no question those greens were seriously inconsistent and really young that course had no resemblance to the course I saw last year from the article I read it seems the USGA is responsible for fucking the course up too bad too......I find it interesting that Gary Player was so critical of the course yet I didn't realize he had bid to build the course for the county......I guess I can understand why Player was being such a bitch about it.....i've never understood why the USGA feels compelled to fuck with a golf courses greens if they had just left them alone they would've been fine.....

Re: and the winner is???????
as Dins said, there are a ton on beautiful tough golf courses up here.....they could never hold a major at Bandon, because it just doesn't have the infrastructure....but set those tees back to the tips, and the pros would be in for a rollicking good time.....the Princess is the hardest course I've ever played with Dunes coming in a close second.....but they just can't get the people necessary up there.....as Dins pointed out, Pumpkin Ridge is a tough course that could be made considerably harder by just not watering the greens for a while....Crosswater is money, but wouldn't pose much of a threat to those guys.....
the point being that not all great golf courses are located on the east coast.....there are some really really nice courses out here that could pose problems for those pros.....and what's with the fucking whining....fuck, I put on courses like that all the time.....suck it up Billy and quit acting like a spoiled fucking stooge...

Re: and the winner is???????
yeah I know what you're saying and truth be told, I am a little embarassed for that course and that the USGA fucked it up so badly....like I said I've been by that course a number of times (as my oldest brother lives about 20 minutes from it) and everytime I've gone by it,it was in spectacular conditionPapa Willie wrote:Per capita, I'm sure that there are FAR prettier courses out west than there are here in the East, Felix! How many times have you seen me say in this thread that I know how fucking pretty it is out there? That's what I'm saying. It's like these poor bastards went out of their way to fuck this place up! There are TONS of courses out west/NW that would blow the doors off of this shit-pit.
Seriously - that has to embarrass y'all a little bit. I've never seen a trailer-park trash public course around here than had shit brown greens like that. I seriously doubt you have up there, either. What would you think of Augusta Nat'l if they cut down all the trees, let shit-colored fescue grow up, and quit watering the greens?
I'm actually taking up for y'all, because I basically lived in the area. I KNOW how pretty it is up there. Trust me!
thats what it looks like normally.....now why the USGA thought burning the fairways to a cinder, not watering the greens at all, and not rolling the greens for an even surface is beyond me.....I guess the USGA just wants scores to be in the 5 under range, rather than 15 or 20 under.....after all, they consider the US Open the most difficult tournament in the world.......Ernie Els said that at least 4 of the greens at Chambers were dead....so I guess the USGA uses a scorched earth approach......6 par 4's in excess of 500 yards wasn't enough, lets burn the course up too, that will show em.....

Rack Billy Horschel for having the balls to come out and tell the truth about the USGA.

Re: and the winner is???????
there's going to be repercussions......those old white haired fuckers don't like to be made fun of and they certainly don't want players telling them they fucked up, even though everybody knew they did......Horschel will be ostracized by the USGA although I think he could give a flying rats ass about what they think.....they have nothing to do with the PGA tour so in effect Horschel can tell them to go fuck themselves and there's not a lot they can do about it......Goober McTuber wrote:Rack Billy Horschel for having the balls to come out and tell the truth about the USGA.

You do realize there were no trees to begin with?Papa Willie wrote:That's a WHOLE lot more acceptable, but I still wish they would have left some trees up.

There probably was trees there -- a hundred years ago. It was a freaking quarry. They used sand/silt that they dredged from the harbor to fill it in.
And rumor has it, the US Open will be back at Chambers in 9 years... maybe they can get it right by then. That's like the USGA defending their shitty prep, it seems. Fuck that, do Sahalee or Pumpkin Ridge (which has proven itself over and over) or the Reserve (proven, and could be made very difficult with enough prep time), or even Crosswater. Just not Chambers.
Or build Bandon into a huge city, which would be ideal. But as it is, the best course complex in the world will never host anything significant, since it truly is surrounded by nothing but cranberries on 3 sides, and the ocean on the 4th.
Aside -- the Bandon dude is trying to obtain more adjacent property to build another course or two. I think there's 5 there already(?). I just find that remarkable -- rich people fly into Coos Bay (about 20 minutes or so up 101, and not a very large city, but at least it's a "city" and not a "town" -- maybe 40K between the surrounding areas) to play golf in the wind in the middle of nowhere. Only thing really going on is a big Ocean Spray plant. Freaking pretty place, though. And over a 5 hour drive for me.
