Who has thrown the fastest recorded pitch?

Post by Jack »

I have looked this up and I believe it is all "old data".

I am getting Nolan Ryan (real first name was Lynn) at 100.9. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/recbooks/rb_guin.shtml
(On official record, the fastest and most accurately recorded pitch during a major league game remains 100.9 mph, registered by California's Nolan Ryan on August 20, 1974 at Anaheim Stadium. )

but I get other highs also.

Bobby Jenks ... According to the Baseball Almanac, his fastest pitch was clocked at 102 mph, recorded on August 27, 2005 at Safeco Field .. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Jenks

Last Night, Detroit vs. Boston... Joel Zumaya struck out Wily Mo Pena on what the scoreboard said was a 102-mph fastball to end the inning. ( http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=260814102 ).

So, has there ever been a faster "officially recorded" pitch than Nolan Ryan's 100.9 MPH?

Zumaya has hit 103 this year...at least according to the FSN Detroit gun. The gun at Comerica seems to be one or two MPH lower. The MLB needs to figure out a standard speed detecting system or have everyone use the same kind of gun because it's kind of dumb to get different speeds for the same pitch. I wonder if any of it has to do with what angle the gun is pointed.

I believe it has more to do with where the gun picks up the ball. Does it pick it up near the pitcher? Halfway? Near the plate? The ball has different velocities depending on where the gun picks it up.

No speed gun around to verify though.

Don't tell that to Bob Feller.

I was watching something the other day, and they were talking about a guy that was hitting 103-104 a few years back, but I can't recall the name.....don't think he had much if any major league time though.
