Computer fails to post

My wife bought me a new case for Xmas (she let me pick it out). I transferred everything to the new case (including a new video card) and started it up. The computer churns, but I hear no beep. I tried the old video car and again, it churns, but no video and no system beep. Tried running it off the onboard video. Still no luck.

I took it to work and our IT guys looked at it. They at first thought the board may be not been grounded correctly, but they thought it looked all right.

Any ideas from that vague description? I'm taking it in for a diagnostic (using computer at work for this post).

you said you transferred everything over to the new case so I'm assuming that meant the old motherboard as well.

Sounds like your Flux Capacitor has gone bad. Open the case and look at the motherboard and find this .

If it's not lit up computer won't work.

Yes, I moved the old motherboard, too. The only thing new was the video card.

what kind of video card?
some of the newer Nvidia cards use a power connector (like what runs into the harddrive/cd rom etc)
have you checked to make sure these are right?

also check your IDE cable going to the HD as well as the jumper settings on the back of the harddrive.

some drives don't like the CS setting.
tried pulling the extra hardware out to go with a bare boot (just what you need to boot up,no soundcard,ethernet card etc)?

when you first power on,can you even get this screen?

running XP?
tried an XP install disk in the cd rom when booting?

have had all the above keepem from booting.
and then some

I tried running video off the new video card, old video card and the board video. Nothing worked.

I don't even get to a bios screen.

It doesn't really matter anyway. It's at the computer repair shop right now.

Ten bucks says you shorted out the motherboard on the case mounts.

naaaa,possible but not probable.
more apt to be a hardware error than a hardware failure.
improperly seated RAM has done the exact same thing to me.

I'll try to cover every base.

I moved everything over exactly how it was in the original case. I even double checked the small plugs near the edge of the board to make sure the power, reset, etc. were correct.

I also reseeded the RAM and all the cards.

Did I mention that I was doing this on my living room floor and that while I was doing this, my daughter jumped on my back and static shocked me several times? Could static electricity surge through me from her to the board?

Absolutely. It's the computer "kiss of death".

Luckily, it may only be the RAM that got zapped. Try a different stick.

My fault, I know. Pretty stupid. I had always heard about things being fried by static electricity, but this is the first time it's happened to me after many instances of me opening up my computer and tinkering with it.

I have no room in my apartment (living there until my house is done in March) so I was forced to spread it out where I had room.

It's okay. I was asking for a new motherboard/processor for months now. This gives me the excuse I need.

I got my computer back today. Haven't tried it yet.

I had to get a new motherboard with a processor and RAM

I had a 1.7 Celeron.

I got a AMD 3.1 Sempron with 512 DDR RAM.

I would have gotten an Athlon, but due to my limited budget what with building a house, I had to settle on this.

If it's the Sempron 3100, it's not a bad chip as far as they go.

I think the 3100 is the only Sempron with 512KB L2 Cache.

I wasn't able to run the HalfLife 2 demo on my old system. Going to try today.

In the past, I had problems with running GTA San Andreas on my system. I can run it fine now, but not as high as I would hoped, but I had heard that about this game. I read somewhere one guy claimed that he had trouble running it very high and he had one of the best video cards and a 3.0 Pentium.

I gave my wife Sims 2 for Christmas. It looks awesome.

Definitely noticed how fast it boots up. Surfing the net is suddenly faster, too.
