Burning DVDs???

Post by indyfrisco »

Just bought a new Sony DVD Burner. Looking to copy some of my DVDs, but every time I try to do a “burn”, it has a pop-up box saying I am trying to copy copyrighted material.

What software/process do I need to burn movies? I’d like to get some freeware, but if there is something that I can buy that isn’t too terribly expensive, I’d do it.

You could use DVD Decrypter (to rip the files) and DVD Shrink (to burn the movies and it also allows you to burn without adding the protection back).

I used them to back up my kids movies since they get scratched to hell.

Both are freeware. DVD Decrytpter has been banned so it's harder to come by.

I couldn't find DVD Decryptor. I downloaded DVD Fab Decryptor. I also downloaded DVD Shrink.

Been awhile since I messed with this kind of stuff. Do I basically put the DVD in my DVD ROM, copy the DVD contents to my Hard Drive with this DVD Fab Decryptor and then use DVD Shrink to copy it to the DVD Writer? I bought DVD -R discs. What exactly is the difference between DVD -R and DVD +R? Does one make a better movie than the other?

I don't know the difference. You need to check your DVD player's compatibility of the formats. My two DVD players only support DVD +R, so that's what I use.

I could help you out with DVD Decryptor, but my computer is busted and it's stuck on my harddrive.

I'm not sure of the steps with that program you got, but DVD Shrink does the burning for you.

I found a copy of DVD Decryptor.

If I remember correctly, my DVD Burner I bought had DVD-R +/- 16X.

I bought 100 Staples Brand DVD -R 8X discs for $45. Hopefully, they are good enough quality.

Thanks for your help.

I may need a copy of that if they have to blow away my harddrive to install the new motherboard. So don't throw it away... :)

If you need help. Do a search for DVD Decryptor walkthru on Google. You'll find several very good and very detailed sets of instructions on how to use it.

I.F., sounds like your drive is up to the task.

DVD shrink reads the file and rips it to your HD. Typically, a commercial DVD is over 8 gigs, so DVD Shrink also compresses the file for you to be burned on a 4.7 gig DVD-R like the ones you bought. One thing is, when DVDShrink has analyzed the file, you'll be given a list of contents on the right side. You can increase the quality of your file by deselecting things you don't care to burn onto your DVD, like the French or Spanish language files.

Then, you rip the disc onto your HD, and you are left with a single .iso file. Open DVD Decryptor to burn the disc. It is basically a disc burning program. Burn the .iso onto your blank disc, and you're ready to roll.

Just get newer DUAL LAYER disks and remove copy protection with DVDShrink.

Yeah, they cost a little more, but the price is coming down everyday.

I find that the quality achieved after compression for a 4.7gig DVD-R is not dramatically reduced. They are more affordable - after you've bought a big sleeve of them, you'll want to use them up before you go all dual-layer and shit.

As long as you don't go below 70% compression, everything should be cool.

DVDShrink also has a frame edit where you can cut out opening and closing credits to reduce compression rate.

yep. You can probably eliminate the preview sequences as well.

Just hit re-author in DVDShrink, and drag 'n drop TITLE 1. That should be the main movie, and nothing else. For further compression you can choose
the 2 Channel audio track over the 5.1, and some opening and closing editing too.

The only time I chose to span a movie over two disks was for the third LOTR.
I wanted that shit tight.
