Wireless setup?

Post by jiminphilly »

Got the laptop that I had previously mentioned in a prior post along with net gear router I ordered. I turned off all firewalls, followed the directions from the cd yet when the installation attempts to logon to netgear I get a page not found.

My DSL modem is indicating a clear connection (no blinking lights) and the same with the router.

Am I missing anything? I have SP 2 installed and I have that fire wall turned off and my symantec real time protection disabled.

did you register the mac address of the new puter?

After you do that, you need to check to see if the new box has an ip address.

run cmd,

Then type "ipconfig" at the C prompt. it should show an IP address

I was on the phone with net gear support and they had me check the ip address under ipconfig and after resetting the router and connecting it directly to the wall to obtain the address it still had problems. The gentlmen from bangledesh told me to return the router because it was probably faulty..

did you check the router settings to make sure the mac address of your computer was listed?

There are also other settings there that neeed to be enabled. Not all those dot dudes know what they're doing.

You have to do the router settings before you do ipconfig release and then renew. Usually it will automatically get an IP when you reboot.

what do you see when you type "ipconfig" at the command prompt? ( go to "start" "run" and type "cmd")

Do you have an assigned IP address, a subnet mask, and a default gateway listed? If no, you will need to do the following:

Open up Internet explorer, and type in the router address. this will be something like 192.xx.xx.xx

It should take you to a log on screen, where you put in a username and password. Your provider should be able to walk you through this.

Once in, you will need the mac address of the wireless adapter in your computer. It is listed on the original purchase box, but again if you don't know it APu should be able to help you get it.

Once on the router site, under the "advanced" tab at the top, you will find the mac address link. "permit PCs listed" should be selected, then click on the "edit mac filter list" Your computers mac address needs to be listed there, or you will not be able to access anything from it thru the router.

After you add the mac address in, you will save changes.

Then go back to the comand prompt, and check to see if you now have a gateway, and an assigned ip address. If not, do the ipconfig /release", followed by "ipconfig /renew"

Once you do that, you should be good to go.

If not, then perhaps the router is bad.

Also, if you don't want to deal with APu, wait until after 7 pm and call your tech support and you will probably get a filipino. Their accents are not quite as pad as the punjabi dudes are. :)
