mp3 players - What do you have?

Post by Cueball »

Looking to finally get one. I'm guessing probably 1 gig eventhough my curerent music library isn't that large. I'm not a big Apple fan and from what I've researched so far on the ipod nano and it's rechargable battery I'm probably staying away.

I'm looking more at price than whistles. What's on your wish list or already on your hip?

Unless you use an Apple or have money to burn, steer away. My wife has an iPod, and the thing's a pain in the ass. There are much better products for much more reasonable prices.

The iPod is built to be on an Apple. The Windows implementation is shaky, at best.

Before I can suggest anything I'd need to know what you're looking for. How many songs do you need it to hold? How important are things like sound quality, ease of use, and battery life? Would you be interested in extra features like video, an FM tuner, or recording?

There are literally hundreds of digital audio players on the market, and while most of them are crap, finding one that suits your needs requires a little research. Unless you want to be part of the crowd, then just get an iPod.

Currently I use an iRiver H140. It's about two years old, and thanks to the excellent, open-source firmware made by Rockbox I can't see myself using anything else for a long time. But since it's no longer produced, if i had to replace it I'd go with an iAudio X5L. It it full of features and boasts a 35 hour battery life. It can also be had for less than a comparable iPod. My brother has the 30GB version and he's quite impressed with it.

I would agree with this. I have a shuffle and while it is great out on the road, moving/creating playlists is a pain in the ass. There is a vast difference between the way an Apple user thinks a program should work and the way the rest of us think it should work.

Got an iPod misself, while Mrs. LabRat has the iPod shuffle.

Being dedicated Mac users, we've had absolutely no issues dealing with the software, although I much prefer my full iPod to the shuffle. Then again, she's not trying to stick a ton of King Crimson, Zappa, and Dean Martin on her device. I've also got an iTrip to broadcast my tunes to my car radio and haven't had issues with that either.

Neither of us has had a problem with the hardware, either.

Just as with computer platforms, it just comes down to which one you prefer.
