At least 640 have reportedly died after dozens threw themselves off a bridge into the river Tigris in Baghdad.

People began to panic after rumours spread of a suicide bomber among the crowd at a Shi'ite ceremony, according to hospital and police sources.

The crowd had been moving towards the Kadhimiya mosque, a major Shi'ite shrine in an old district of north Baghdad.

They were celebrating the martyrdom of Musa Al-Kadhim, a revered religious figure among Shi'ites.

Earlier, it was reported that at least seven people died in three separate mortar attacks on the crowd.

Tensions have been running high between the main religious communities ahead of a referendum on a new constitution for the country.
