A couple of nights ago we watched the new documentary, directed by Questlove who won an Oscar and Grammy for "Summer of Soul," about Sly and the Family Stone. Highly recommended. Anybody growing up in the Bay Area when I did in the late 60s and early 70s was hearing their music all the time. The documentary does a good job of telling the story of a meteoric rise and then total cratering due to too much hype and drugs. But the music...it's still very fresh. Sly was a genius, and they had a huge influence on a lot of musicians that's still felt today. Being a band of black and white, male and female members it was our first exposure to DEI without knowing it. it My first rock concert was Sly and the Family Stone at Frost Amphitheater in 1971, the first year that we were able to drive. I won two tickets calling in to KFRC AM, the Big 610.
