Actually found myself in a similar situation once, and I was probably in the wrong because at the least I should have asked permission, wading a creek fishing that cut through a wealthy dude's huge landholdings back in my 20's. I could see him flying across the fields on a four wheeler and I got closer I could see he was not only packing a pistol; had a rifle slung across his back which I took to imply his serious intent.
