Maybe It's Run Its Course...
...but I'm not giving up on it quite yet. TuneTown, that is. As smackaholic pointed out recently, listenership has been down, advertisers are getting impatient, and the Deciders may choose to go in another direction if the ratings continue to swirl the bowl. I admit I've never been Billy Mays when it comes to marketing the product; my position has been you know it's there, and you know where and when you can find it. If you wanna tune in, great. If you don't, don't. Most here choose the latter. BarFlie records many of the shows and I make them available in TuneTown On Demand, which is cool, but as I believe most listeners of the show will tell you, does not match the vibe of being in Chat while the shows air live.
My philosophy and approach to TuneTown isn't complicated but can be challenging to pull off effectively. The core of the show is rock and blues. Some of you like country, a few of you might like rap, and 'holic digs jazz, but if you wanna ease your jones for those types of music and others like, say, classical, you'll have to look elsewhere. I've been known to play a little of each of those genres on rare occasions, but they represent the exception rather than the rule.
Balance is key, in my opinion, to most things in life including making TuneTown a quality experience. My approach to achieving optimal balance is to find the right combination of kick-ass tunes and artists that most listeners have never heard before, together with tunes that are familiar but haven't been heard for a while, and the occasional classic that everyone knows and loves. This isn't as simple as it may appear, because one always has to consider the audience at any given time and what they want to hear, and with listeners tuning in and out throughout each show, the mix of songs to keep everyone happy is always changing. BarFlie wants to hear The Moody Blues, Emmylou Harries, Billy Joel, and CSN&Y. War Wagon likes middle-of-the-road classic rock, 'holic likes everything from Dave Brubeck to The Strypes, 88 digs blues from Leadbelly to the J. Geils Band, Dinsdale is a Deadhead who also likes The Dandy Warhols, I'll play Mott the Hoople and Jason & The Scorchers for Wolfman, and stuff from Elvis Costello and The Angry Samoans for Moving Sale, while Mgo & Screwy like more modern alternative. I try to play just about every request I get, if not during the show in in which it's requested, then in the following week's. And, of course, I'm vain enough to believe that the songs I personally want to play should be dug by everyone, and that the stories behind the music are interesting enough to share with you when I open the mic. It's a bit of a juggling act, and sometimes it's more successfully pulled off than others. But I dig the fuck out of trying every time.
TuneTown returns from holiday hiatus tonight at 9:00 EST, and as I do every week, believe I have a show for the ages in store for you. Hope to see many of the regulars in there tonight (thanks to all of you, btw), and it's always a blast when newbies drop in. If you have nothing better to do on Friday nights, give it a shot. You may actually like it a little.
Rock on, dickslaps!

If I can wake up at 3:00am (my local time) just to join in the chat and tell everybody to fuck off, anyone can go to TuneTown.

I try to get in there as much as possible. Sometime I sign in as digits so I'm incognito. Even when I sign in as Pickle everyone is nice to me, even Moving Tard.
I wish more people would show up because Smackie is an awesome host. Smackaholic is always there, barfile is always there, SGV is always there, a couple females are always there. It's a fun time.
I think we need to advertise over at net and bring those people over. It's great time!

Smackie doesn't allow trash talking during tune time. It's suppose to be a fun zone. I've actually been in there along with Diego in Seattle and didn't call him a pedo even though he is one. It's a smack-free chill out zone.

I've never had to be an enforcer, 'cept for maybe once with Toddowen, who never showed up again. Listeners just naturally chill in there, and there's some smack running' done on occasion, but not with the venom we see here on the board. Folks drop in for a different reason and with different attitudes than they do on the board. The Big Pickle wrote:Smackie doesn't allow trash talking during tune time.

You fukking assholes that don't take advantage of SC's weekly brilliancy should all be shot in the gut and left to die slowly. Get your sorry carcasses in there and try to suck as little as possible.

The only way to grow Tune Town is to grow board membership.
You can not market it beyond the members here because any newbie coming in would have no inclination or joy in speaking to any of you.
The joy for y'all is in having a shared background of board banter of approaching 20 years now.
You're friendly with all of the assholes here, and you know all about everyone's asshole background on the boards.
That is the background and the glue.
No newbie coming in would give a hairy rat's ass about any of it.
And that is how meaningless most of your lives are, to be frank.
This board should suck it up and seek to merge with .net.
Now I know many of you (especially lefties) balk at the thought, but you should look at a big picture.
This board is stale as hell now.
Circling.
Smackie would grow his audience -- and he does a very nice job as Tune Town director.
Have a nice day.
