So we are about T - 16 hours.

Water is rising in Galveston and the waves are breaking over the top of the 17 foot tall sea wall. West end of Galveston island is underwater. The eye of the storm is still 200 miles from landfall.

I will post updated pics as power and light allow. Worst of strom is due overnight and that might limit the ability to take pics during the height of the storm.

Hopefully it will not be that bad. But there is an all-too realistic chance that it will be, and you want to be ready. Godspeed.

Forecasters said Ike's storm surge -- not high winds -- will be the deadliest aspect of the Hurricane Ike. The National Hurricane Center is forecasting a 20-foot surge for a large swath of Texas and the Louisiana coasts. Meteorologist Dennis Feltgen said some waves could be 50 feet tall.

"All neighborhoods ... and possible entire coastal communities ... will be inundated during the period of peak storm tide," the weather service said. "Persons not heeding evacuation orders in single-family one- or two-story homes will face certain death."

"That's the most dangerous part of a hurricane," TV station KPRC's meteorologist Anthony Yanez said.
A 15- to 22-foot storm surge is expected wherever Ike makes landfall.

Experts said Ike stretches across nearly the entire Gulf of Mexico and is about 70 percent larger than the average hurricane. That girth will push the storm surge through costal communities that are sorely underprepared.

Experts said that because coastal waters in Texas and Louisiana are so shallow, storm surge is usually larger there than in other regions.

The storm's track shifted slightly Thursday afternoon and then again Thursday night.

"There has been a little shift, about a few miles. It could show a trend that it's moving," KPRC's chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley said. "It's expected to pump up to a Category 3 by the time it makes landfall, with 110 to 120 mph winds as a possibility."

Ike's tropical storm-force winds stretch for more than 500 miles, and hurricane-force winds of at least 74 mph stretch for 220 miles.

Galveston appears to be right in the bullseye, a little more than 200 miles away.

And yes we expect you to pay your part for any help required. We can say living in your area is just as dumb what with Volcanoes and and Earthquakes. Hell, at least we know when hurricanes will strike.

Nice house---but you might want to shit can the plywood thing and invest in some nice aluminum accordion shutters or something like that. I can close up all my windows, sliders, and doorways in less than 1/2 and hour. Riding out a hurricane is not all that bad as long as you are out of a flooding/storm surge area. Good luck !

Even though it's only a Cat. 2, this storm's wind field is a lot larger than a typical hurricane. That is why they are expecting the storm surge to be so high, along with widespread wind damage. The city of Houston is expected to get 90 mph winds downtown.
