Jerry Glanville

So, to make a long story short, Portland State Football (D-1AA) has kind of become a sinking ship. Despite efforts a few years ago in the form of a real AD, and throwing a little money at the problem, it's still sinking. They've done a good job up until now at hiding the fact, but their new contracts for scheduling games include a clause that absolves them of liability if for some reason they don't have a team that year.

Not good. Especially for a school that is not too many years removed from being a D2 elite team(not that a school of that size has any business playing D2...it's a bigger school than University of Oregon).

The catch is, PSU has always been really into those crazy academics, and not so much sports. I mean, those Asian kids have to start spomewhere in their quest to dominate the engineering fields.

For the last 12(?) years, they've had a fine coach in Tim Walsh. But he left. And now the university is deciding whether to move ahead and try to build, or to just fold it all up and scrap football.

And then...yeserday...Jerry Glanville, in all of his bigger-than-life, mouth-tacular glory, comes rolling into town. He did radio shows and interviews(and what a hoot it would be if all prospective coaching prospects at all levels were so forthcoming). Dude's already talking shit on the Montana Griz(always a crowd-pleaser in the Big Sky).

What a character. I don't think he's actually been offered the job, but that didn't matter...he's basically accepted the job on live radio. Even went so far as to describe where Portland State went wrong in its presentation/marketing...which was pretty darn intelligent -- how with all of the transplants in the area, PSU would never replace anyone's rooting interest(including Oregon), but wasn't playing at that level anyway, so it should be presented as a suppliment to one's main rooting interest).

What makes it all the more interesting(as interesting as D1AA can get in the offseason, anyway), is that by himself, Glanville has no direct ties to Portland State, or the city itself... but his two bestest, oldest football buddies, June Jones and Mouse Davis(inventor of the Run and Shoot), are both Portland State(home of the Run and Shoot) guys.

On the radio yesterday, when asked if he did take the job, would Mouse Davis be coming to run the offense -- "Funny thing, that. Mouse already held a press conference announcing he was going back to Portland State...even before I went to Portland to interview. I told him 'Mouse, A) I haven't been offered the job yet, B) If offered, I'm not 100% sure I'll take it, and C) We certainly haven't discussed hiring assistants.' Mouse said 'Yeah, well none of that matters -- we're going to Portland State, Jerry!' "

This could be the return of ther Glory Days of 20-30 years ago, when guys like June Jones, Neil Lomax, and Chris Crawford threw up insane offensive numbers, while making the Run and Shoot famous, and launching Mouse Davis into much higher profile jobs.

Things could get goofy and fun while trying to right that sinking ship. I'll watch. Good times. Catch is, if these moves are a runaway success, we're talking avout a team that plays in a building that might hold 20K if it was stuffed to the gills.

Go Vikings. No more bitter Tim Walsh. No more Pokey Allen going to Boise State to die. Let the return od God Davis begin. No more coaches leaving to make other teams great(sup Boise State). Let's play some MOTHERFUCKING FOOTBALL smack in the middle of Downtown again...the way it used to be.

Blame management for not getting him an O-line (wasn't freaking Dierdorf on that unit?), rather than blaming Jesus Freak Lomax(whose kid is, I believe, going to be the next QB at Boise State...what's with all of the Portland State diehards defecting to Boise?).

so does that mean Elvis is coming to the U & L?

I guess Glanville was showered with Elvis dolls and printed up box-seat tickets with Elvis' name on them when he showed up.

I guess it speaks volumes (in a negative way) about Portland State Football, when Glanville interviewing for the job is the most exciting thing to happen since the jump from D2.

But for us OG Vikes fans, anything that even hints[/i[ back to the days where Lomax lit up Delaware State (who was a D1AA team at the time, if I remember right) 105-0 is getting the juices flowing. Sure, I'm an Oregon fan, and always will be...but PSU has always been that "also-ran" team for me, and it's much easier to drive a couplefew miles (or better yet, hop on a bus) to see a game, rather than driving 100 miles.

FWIW -- despite being a "sinking ship," Portland State played all 3 OOC games against D1A teams last year -- New Mexico, Oregon, and Kal. They even beat New Mexico(got KILLED by Oregon and Cal). That's some pretty serious scheduling for a "sinking ship."

And a point Glanville made, was that PSU was freaking nuts for letting Oregon State play Eastern Washington OOC, rather than PSU. I think he said something like "how do you ever let that football money leave your state? See, these are the things this program needs to adress to get back on track."

Seems like good, sound advice to me.

If it makes you feel better...I'm well-aware of it. And Glanville dressing in a cheesey all-black suit as a Johnny Cash tribute.

And after Joe Montana got injured, and Steve Young had a breakout-game against his Falcons, his comments about Young -- "Man's got courage. The man's got guts...I don't think he'll be with us long."

If nothing else, dude brings teh funnay. And Mouse Davis will bring the offense.

Dins...knew you were but ren faire boy isn't...

anyway good luck with Glanville...there was actually speculation that when tOSU was looking for a D Coordinator that he was on a list...somehow I can't see glanville and the vest getting it together...

Also, I must amend my statement naming Mouse as the "inventor of the Run and Shoot." He wasn't, but was the forst coach to make it a workable system, and is responsible for popularizing it. He actually learned it by reading a book by Glenn "Tiger" Ellison(who he eventually brought to the U&L as an assistant when he was coaching high schools in Portland's western burbs).

I lived in Houston for 13 years, and yes, I was there when he coached the team.

It still doens't make your idea of a joke, funny.

Actually, stop trying to be funny... because you're not.

Did you really think that would be funny???

no but apparently you don't get dry humor or any humor...not sure why you are taking such a huge offense to the joke...but that is par for the course for you...

Please... explain what part of this is even remotely funny?

buckeye_in_sc wrote:so does that mean Elvis is coming to the U & L?

Let me guess... you're the kinda guy that thinks "Bob Hope" was a comedian that people were laughing with, and not at?

you don't find the least bit of humor in Jerry Glanville leaving tickets for Elvis at a pro football game? Hmmm...ok

the only thing about Bob Hope I cared about is he was a Buckeye...

That's not what I said, dipshit!

I said you're not funny!

Can your little itty-bitty brain comprehend the difference?

I dunno about the Elvis joke, but the only thing funny to me in this thread is mdouche acting as some sort of authority on comedy.

Seriously, has anybody directed their laughter WITH you on this board, and not AT you? Even once? I'd like to see a link.

This is a guy who wets himself by calling people "retards" and "hillbillies" in threads up-and-down.

If so, you'd be puting up a double-double everyday.

Dude, did you just link up a thread from July of 2005?

Bwahahahaha!

Okay...fine. That's fair game, I guess. But you aren't done yet. Go ahead and quote the post where you made the funnay, or where you got the run for it. There's 8 pages to that thing, and since I'm the accuser, and you've accepted the challenge, the burden of proof is on YOU.

Let's see this gem of yours.

Wow, you started an amusing thread where everyone else did the work to bring the funny. You were essentially the umpire who tosses out the ball to a pitcher who throws a perfect game.

Here's a better selection of your "funny" moments:

What part of your turn, is lost on you?

Oh yeah, "your turn".

Speaking of turns... the funniest thing I've ever read on this board, was the fact that there are still people living in Michigan on purpose.

I know, some of you dont make enough money to leave right away, but seriously, how old are you...10?

Doesn't ma and pa kick you hillbilly's out at the age of 9 or something?

I'm not sayin'... Roll 420 style and live in the most expensive region in the country. Hell, your own predicament tells you that you couldn't make enough in your lifetime, to be able to afford to live here for a year.

What I'm really trying too say is...

Doesn't Michigan share a border with Indiana??? and really, how hard would it be to jump that fence?

Typical mdouche script.

Location smack will always be funny. At least for those of us that can laugh at you.

Krillian, you give "Sissyroo" a run for his money, when you say you went to "Michigan State", yet root for Notre Dame...

Not that I can blame you... since "State" is in Michigan.

Glanville and posse to Portland....

Bwwaahhaaaa... maybe so.

But PSU has NO alumni support, no stadium, no football program and all the mouth running bullshit does no hide the fact that the administration wants to bust a cap into the football program as soon as possible.

No AD ...Check

No alumni support....check

No stadium......check

Posture about hiring a washed up mouth piece to get the non existent to open up ther checkbooks....not....check.

You know the funny thing? I can prove that I got a scholarship to MSU. Can you do the same about your claim of an offer, for football, from UCLA?

Keep digging, mensa. That crater you've got going is almost as deep and wide as your asshole after you punch submit.
