Huh. If only Cal had the foresight to make about 1000 more reservoirs about ten years ago. All that water going to waste...

I can't wait for the SCP story built around that first photo. Those niqqas love divide by zero scenarios.

But if we just bought a few thousand of these and put them in strategic places around the state, we'd be able to ride out even the worst droughts.

Rooster, don't let them get to you. California steals water from the rest of the nation. All that X largest economy talk is as hogwash as Texas'. What happens when the aid is cut off? Live on the ocean and have to have useable water piped in from the interior instead of desalinating your own, folks.
They've been doing the spiritual equivalent of relying on strategic pools in other peoples' backyards for decades now. So fuck that sanctuary state.

Dumbass.
Yes, Cali steals lots of water, but they use it to feed the nation and a fair bit of the rest of the planet.

The whole fukking idea of a reservoir is to catch water when it falls. The larger/more numerous you make them, the less they have to steal water from you U&Lers when it doesn't fall. This really is a fairly simple concept.Diego in Seattle wrote:You do understand that reservoirs do nothing for the drought when rain isn't coming down, don't you?Rooster wrote:Huh. Smackaholic, food prices are artificially raised and lowered so that capitalists can make a profit, not to make sure food is affordable/available. How much food is destroyed for the sake of capitalism in this country?
How much cheaper would all that produce be if it were all allowed on the market? Or given away?
Your argument is no go, bruh.

Re: A place I would not want to be caught
Sooooo... now that the rain is here and there are no additional reservoirs built to capture all this tasty water, California should just shrug their shoulders and tell themselves, "Well, maybe next time,"? If we take your logic to its' natural conclusion, reservoirs do nothing for the state's citizens. Therefore, they should dismantle them and use those great big bowls to make the world's largest skate parks, yes?Diego in Seattle wrote:You do understand that reservoirs do nothing for the drought when rain isn't coming down, don't you?Rooster wrote:Huh. If collecting water is a fool's errand, then why have any reservoirs at all?

1. Actually the whole fukking idea of a reservoir is to catch watersmackaholic wrote:The whole fukking idea of a reservoir is to catch water when it fall. They're also storing snow-melt in the spring and summer.
2. You can't just drop a reservoir anywhere you want, or make them as big as you want. You have to have a river and a place to put a dam. Yosemite Valley is probably the best remaining place left. How do you think that would go over?
3. California doesn't get any significant amount of water from the U&L. Virtually all water that originates out of state comes from the Chilly Colorado. Consult a map.
4. The biggest reservoir in California is the snow-pack in the Sierra Nevada. The water stored there in a normal year is probably more than the capacity of all the man-made reservoirs in the state combined. Even if you could build a couple hundred new reservoirs, you wouldn't store enough water there to supply the entire state for the entire year. The reservoirs serve as "capacitance," which is temporary storage to even out the fluctuations in the flow of water coming off the mountains.
More like fairly simple mind.fairly simple concept.

Re: A place I would not want to be caught
The only one Cali is "stealing" water from is Mexico. California does get a good chunk of water from the Upper Klamath Basin (which we in the U&L would just as soon not call "U&L" -- banjo-pluckin' motherfucks). But Agency Lake and Upper Klamath Lake (impoundments) keep the Klamath flowing in late summer, and the water gets pumped over the mountains into the Sacramento River (and environmental abomination), to keep the Sac flowing, which if you've ever driven up the northern end of the valley, just about dries up.Mikey wrote:

Unfortunately for Cali, there's much talk of whacking the Klamath dams, since we'd kind of like our salmon back, you environment-hating fucks. If that happens, California is going to have to build more storage in the Upper Sacramento Valley. Getting water through there in summer is pretty important to the whole country. Pumping it from the Klamath is a lame way to do it.

Re: A place I would not want to be caught
Yes, mikey, part of the job of reservoirs is flood control. This does not mean it isn't also a fairly decent way to stockpile water during a particularly wet winter.
As for that spillway, I suspect they are going to end up ripping the whole fukking thing out and re-pour it. I suspect there is a lot more undermining than what we see. And next time, maybe seed the edges with someonething. Yeah, it will cost a bt of water to keep it irrigated during the dry stretches, but beats having to rebuild the spillway after every flood.

Where is Gov. Moonbeam?
Re: A place I would not want to be caught
This is great opportunity to put all those illegal aliens to work! Think about it-- they've got experience swimming, climbing vertical surfaces, and working in dirt, so building a dam would be a natural pairing of worker talents to job requirements. It's a win-win for everyone. Cal gets something for all those tax dollars being spent on Mexicans and those Mexicans can put those hard earned skills to use helping out their new homeland!

He asked the Orange pedobear to declare a state of emergency last Friday. Ball is in your court you fat stupid drunken tard.
Re: A place I would not want to be caught
Why would the President (or any Feds) declare a state of emergency for damage to a non-federal dam?
Sounds like Cali is just trying to ladle some gravy (as usual).
Here in the U&L, we fix damage to dams all the time -- on our power company's and our ratepayers dime... unless it's a federal dam... see how that works?
Then again, we inspect them regularly, so they don't fal apart (very often). Maybe if California didn't blow all its money on illegals and whatnot, they'd have money to keep these things from happening.

Aaaaaaaand, it turns out they've known about the failing spillway for TWELVE FREAKING YEARS.
Sounds reasonable -- spend all the money on illegals, and all order of stupidity, and wait for it to fail, then beg all the other states to pay for the damage.

Re: A place I would not want to be caught
DWR and the people of Orroville are fucked. Dropping bags of rocks into the emergency spillway is not going to stop the erosion if they try to use it again.
They don't plan to use the emergency spillway because they have been running at 100,000 cfs flow out the primary concrete lined spillway.
They are fucked, Another storm front expecting to drop 8" in the area from Wednesday through Sunday with the leading storm to be relatively warm that will add to snow melt below ~7000'. Dammed if they do and dammed if they don't, that spilway is only going to erode further which basically is/was a big portion of the right abutment of the dam. They are going to sacrifice the powerhouse but there is only so much water they will be able to download through the two 8-10' diameter tunnels. The last thing they want to do is overtop the primary pile of dirt.
They are probably hoping the shear planes in the underlying rock (towards the right of the 3rd pic) do not extend much further.
*Not going to be an M2ool, these picture were linked from the SF Chronicle and SJ Mercury News web sites.

Re: A place I would not want to be caught
The Feds have to help on this. Far too many people in danger to leave this in governor moonbean's hands. He has clearly shown that he gives zero fucks about the dam. It wasn't even on his list of potential infrastructure projects, yet high speed rail and sanctuary cities are. Step in to help now.
Regardless of what happens with this next round of storms, the lake level is going to have to be dropped drastically this summer to allow repairs. Not sure what that means for CA residents and their water availability if this a is really dry summer/fall. Bottom line the state water director or whatever his title might be should be fired last night.
Unfortunately this isn't going to be a one off problem either. Environmental groups have made it nearly impossible to get any new dams permitted and built in the US. With our existing dams aging and in need of repair we are going to need to replace some of them rather soon. But as long as the environmental groups can file lawsuit after lawsuit with the intention of delaying we will hear more stories like this.
