West Virginia? I'll be surprised if they finish in the top 25 this year. Too much tumult.

Have to second that. Lost most of their D, which wasn't all that great to begin with. The losses of Slaton, Reynaud, and Schmitt are bigger than most pundits think. The loss of Magee is bigger than most pundits think as well.

I don't think WVU is even close to a Top 5 team but I think they'll finish there because of the schedule. I think the Big East takes a step back this year because some of the top teams (ie Rutgers, South Florida) don't look to me like they're as good as they've been the last couple of years and so I think they'll do what Wisconsin does every year and pad their way to a nice record.

For starters

1) USC
2) USC's practice squad
3) Toejam's kids football team
4) USC's incoming recruits
5) USC's managers

Then in the eyes of college football

1) Vandy
2) South Carolina
3) Ole Miss
4) Arkansas
5) tie UGA, Tenn, UF, Auburn, Miss St, LSU

For Real - in no particular order

Oklahoma
OSU
UGA
Auburn - yes I think they have a legit shot...they lost some very close games last year

Every year we hear that WVU will rip through their Big East schedule...and every year they lose a couple of conference games.

Every year lately, they are included in top 5 preseason predictions...just as habit, really.

They've lost the coach that fueled their success, and their defense is going to be worse than usual...at a time where the Big East is running the ball better.

That was a heck of a win against Georgia a few years ago...but they haven't really backed it up, from what I can see.

I know offense wins football games these days...but you need at least the semblance of a defense, and they're going to be pretty bad.

Rest of the list looks about right though.

No, USF will be okay but WVU's got them at home and it's a revenge game on top of that. I think USF is an 8 or 9 win team.

Uhh, yeah. It's the team that beat your slappy-ass Tigers not once but TWICE last year. But I suppose everybody should just conveniently forget about that and give Mizzou the benefit of the doubt? Nice try, anyway.

I don't give praise to one-hit-wonders until they prove they're anything but. OU, on the other hand, has an almanac's worth of history to prove they'll likely be worth a damn. Funny how years and years of winning awards you that sort of respect.

After years of turmoil, Mizzou finally pulls one respectable season out of its ass, and TigerFan is not asking for, but DEMANDING respect? Ahahahahaha.

I guess the fact that the team that treated you like red headed step children twice having 16 returning starters has no bearing on the conversation. :hfal:

i think MU will be pretty good. if they don't win 10 games, something is wrong. i also think, Northwise, people (at least on boards and that i know) are maybe underselling KU a little. people are saying they were a product of favorable South schedule rotation and cupcake OOC and will come back to earth this year and be "the old KU".

it's true they did have a cupcake OOC and didn't play OU or UT, but they DID win the Orange Bowl. i think they are still possibly a 7-9 win top end Alamo Bowl type team which for KU isn't anything to sneeze at. the OOC is still kinda soft (minus a legit roadie at South Florida) and Reesing is back. I think they cobble together a decent season/record, even though they have some replacing to do on D.

maybe OU, MU, UT, and Tech as slotting higher in the bowls (no presumed order there). ATM=complete mystery as usual (9 wins, 4 wins: who knows?). of other bowl eligible types, CU has a brutal schedule and plays KU in Lawrence. OSU, they score a lot. i could see Pelini in the Indy or Insight.com bowl in the same group with CU, ATM, and Pokie State--in the Insight.com, Independence, Houston Bowl group.

as far as a top 5, i'd really like to get on the Sooner bandgwagon...but given the "psychological frailty" the team showed last year (up 24-7 at CU and it's Texas week on the OU sidelines and WVU--Tech was a stinker but Bradford goes out and the Leach had his quarter and a half of confusing the snot out of the D and it was enough to win....truth be told, Halze plays pretty good once he settles in) and the collapse against Texas in 06 i don't know. something makes me a little uneasy until proven otherwise.

I don't disagree about us winning 8 or 9 games. We'll have a good team, but there are a couple of road games that scare me.

We won at WVU last time we were there in a late November game and last year was a revenge game for WVU as well, so I don't think we'll be too intimidated.

Any team that can put together a hurry-up drive can give WVU a good scare. If they don't see the huddle, they start waving their white flags.

Props Sam, this is a challenging thread. It's getting harder and harder to do a heartfelt preseason top 5 as the waistline of "sports media" ever expands.

Just curious here, a lot of you have Oklahoma in your top 5. And if we are talking about the end of the season (it only makes sense to talk about final ratings), are you assuming Oklahoma overcomes their recent bowl game slide? The same could be said for OSU as well.

Secondly, outside of the occassional WVU, most of these picks seem pretty safe. With a few exceptions, what about KU, Mizzou, Miami, ATM, ASU, LSU,....etc. Oklahoma takes care of three of those but given the number of late season upsets last year, I am thinking we will see a similar setup this year. Not because we are starting a trend but because there seemed to be a lot more parity last year. Mizzou has a lot of their team back. Shannon seems to be turning Miami around.

Just some thoughts.
