Re: Top 5
Schimmel wouldn't probably be my favorite now, but I loved him and his blue humor in my 20s. He also recorded one of his HBO specials in Kalamazoo, why, I have no idea. But that was great. I read his book, Cancer on $5 per day, about how, guess what, beat cancer. It's really inspirational. Dude had a pretty interesting life.
I met Schimmel in 2008 in Kzoo at a book signing. I was kind of depressed at the time. I was living in South Bend and just got dumped and was feeling not very upbeat about my future. I went to his book signing and the place was absolutely packed with cancer survivors who were spilling their guts to Schimmel about their REAL problems and that woke me up pretty quick. Schimmel stuck around to talk to EVERYONE who wanted to talk to him. What a guy.

There is a lot to be said for a stand-up who can kill it without using profanity.
1. Robin Williams - Simply electric. Wind him up and watch him go.
2. George Carlin - A comic genius.
3. Bill Hicks - Brutal, smart, creative.
4. Don Rickles - Master of improvisation, master of insult.
5. Jay Leno - Not good as Tonight Show host, but great as a stand-up.
I could easily rattle off a dozen more who just missed the cut.

Re: Top 5
I’d have to put an asterisk next to Rodney, that when he would go on the Tonight Show it was just another level of brilliance.
He’d do his standup routine, completely kill it, then go sit in the chair next to Johnny and continue his routine. Johnny was a great straight-man, played the part beautifully (how’s your health these days?).
Those dynamics were once in a millennium.
