The Good Doctor
Dr. J
The Doc stirred up some shit by releasing his all-time starting five, and his all-time second team.
His all-time starting five...
Oscar Robertson
Jerry West
Elgin Baylor
Bill Russell
Wilt Chamberlain
Sincerely, Wolfman! :)
His second team...
Magic Johnson
Michael Jordan
Larry Bird
Karl Malone
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
He is taking a dump on players of the last couple of decades, and I find that a little bit cathartic, actually.
But a few comments should be made.
1. Placing Wilt and B. Russell on the starting five is a cop-out. You've got to pick one of them.
2. Tim Duncan belongs on that second team in place of K. Malone.
3. LeBron not being found anywhere is wack.
4. The whole thing, while somewhat amusing is wack. You can only judge players by how they did in their own era, and so yes, there were great players prior to Dr. J's time. He has chosen to honor them. Elgin Baylor is on an all-time top five? Really?
5. This is fun, but also just a lot of noise.
Comments?

Malone - 36,374 points
Add Malone's elbows to the mix. The guy was a beast.
Re: The Good Doctor
I still say if I was in a game of 2 on 2 and I could pick a player in his prime with me, it would be Wilt.

Duncan was the top player on a team that won 5 NBA titles.
Duncan was finals MVP 3 times.
Duncan was also 15x NBA all-defensive.
Duncan was, imo, a better all around player than Malone.

Re: The Good Doctor
It's hard to argue with that.
Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
10 seconds left in a tie game and you are inbounding the ball.
Who do you wish could take the last shot for your team?
Survey says...
Larry Bird!

Re: The Good Doctor
Good points. But Duncan was definitely on the better team. So, were the Spurs great largely because of Duncan? Or was Duncan great because he was on a better team? It's a good question. They say great players make their teammates better, so you might win the argument here.Softball Bat wrote: ↑Thu Apr 29, 2021 12:52 pm Duncan was the top player on a team that won 5 NBA titles.

Ray Allen
Reggie Miller
Damian Lillard

Brandon Roy absolutely destroyed everyone else in the "clutch shot" stat for 5 years, but I'll say it was too small a sample size.

Re: The Good Doctor
I would add Robert Horry to that list. Maybe he's not my number one choice, but he at least deserves a mention.

For that last shot I'll pick Pete Maravich .

I'll take MJ on that last second shot.

If he had a FT % over 50% or could hit a 10 ft jumper, I’d agree. But he couldn’t.
Too many other big men that could do more than dunk. And that’s enough to make up for lacking his unmatched combination of size/strength.

So if you had Chamberlain and Russell on your roster you’d bench one of them?

An all-time starting five should not have two centers on it.

Maybe.Could it have three guards on it ?
If you want to call the small forward a "guard."
You shouldn't have two point guards on an all-time starting five, just like you shouldn't have two centers on an all-time starting five.
Dr. J. felt a desperate need to include Wilt, Kareem, and Bill on his two units, and there was no way for him to accomplish that other than to place two centers on one of the teams.
He should have nutted up and left one of the three off.
Sometimes you've got to make the difficult choices.
You can't have an all-time starting five and have Magic Johnson and John Stockton both on the unit.

Re: The Good Doctor
The Doc's all-time starting five
Oscar Robertson
Jerry West
Elgin Baylor
Bill Russell
Wilt Chamberlain
Russell Westbrook has now tied O. Robertson for the most triple doubles in NBA history.
And he's done it in 100 fewer games.
Step aside, O.
Russ cracks the all-time starting five!
