The dude is very talented. He puts a lot of pickers to shame. Saw him at Pickathon in 2014 I think. Another talented dude is Caleb Klauder. Foghorn String Band in one of his gigs. He picks mandolin and has some great vocals as well, hard to pin him down as straight blue grass since he uses percussion.

I had never hear the guy’s name until probably a couple of months ago and never gave it a second thought until the other day when I read a piece on JamBase where he was covering some acoustic Dead stuff and Willin’ by Little Feat during his Drive-In Tour. That was enough to get an old Hippie fart to check it out. I was about as blown away as you are.

Apparently he’s developed a pretty substantial and devoted fan base among the “younger set” and is getting a lot of cred for turning a new generation on to Bluegrass or Newgrass or whatever you want to call it. There’s a complete show from Red Rocks on YouTube that’s pretty damn good.

The best outdoor venues I’ve been to are the Vina Robles Amphitheater in Paso Robles and the Hollywood Bowl. The Bowl is pretty big but gets good marks not only for the quality of the shows but also the food, and you can bring your own wine in.

I like outdoor amphitheater venues. I have been to Red Rocks....when it was empty. Extremely cool looking place and I am sure a great place to watch a show. Same for the Hollywood Bowl.

Have seen shows at Hartford's version of this. Very good sound. Same for Nashville.

The sound isn't as good as a good indoor one, but better than a shitty indoor one. I still remember seeing Rush at the Hampton Coliseum, aka Echo Canyon. It was horrible.

Saw Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard there in one show in 1981. Great sound, lot of hammered people grooving on the music.

I love any outdoor venue, and have been to a lot. Best was The Doobie Brothers at the Oregon Garden a beautiful horticultural garden with a 2,800 seat grass seating area. Late summer showin2008, warm evening with plenty of wine and beer and the smell of good weed on the air.

Pat,Tom,John all came back out after the show and hung out.

Let me clarify.

Rush was outstanding per usual.

What Hampton Coliseum did with their product was horrible.

It sounded like Rush was playing 50 ft away.....and 500 ft.....and 1000ft.

Believe it is still there.

Hope they’ve hung some sort of baffling from the ceiling of that dump to cut down on the echoes.

Wonder if Rush played there on their Test for Echo Tour.

Would have been appropriate.

Same. I never even heard of Rush until I got to college in the fall of 1990 and the only people who listened to it there were the guys that were sort of old nerds. The guy that was the big Rush fan was named Todd, he was from Texas and his dad owned a software company. Todd was a returned missionary and was like 24 years old. He had a Rolex for each day of the week and reminded me of the older guys in the marching band when I was a freshman in High School. Todd would buy alcohol for me the first semester of my freshman year and all I had to do was introduce him to girls. Todd loved Rush.
I never did.

I'm sorry, this story of the wayward Mormon needs a lot more detail fleshed out.

What was Todd's malfunction? Why would a rich 24 year old ever need help with hoes? Did you ever tell Todd no?

Regarding Rush, I find them to be the most polarizing band I can think of when it comes to fans.

Some bands have a wide range of interest varying from worship to don't like them, with most folks laying somewhere along the spectrum, spread pretty evenly.

Rush is different. There may be a few that say they can take them or leave them. I think our resident music fan, SC is among them, but most are at one end of the spectrum or the other. You are either part of Rush Army like JSC and myself, or you are utterly uninterested in them like mikey or shmick.

And it has little to do with your overall music taste. My best friend and I have very similar tastes in music overall, with this one exception. Dude fukking abhors Rush!!!
